Beads

I cannot live without
These tiny beads,
The simple prayers
Learned long ago
In recitation,
Often kneeling before
Those outstretched arms, embracing
Our everyday lives.

I cannot live without
These tiny beads,
Wood, glass or rose petal
Many colored circles that have
No end, that pace
My heart with prayers
Sent heavenforth and back.

In my older age
I hold them as I did,
Once a child my mother's hand,
Secure in her shadow
Held safe from harm,
Chirping my little thoughts
Into her loving heart.
