I wrote this poem in 1977, the year I found my own poetic voice, small as it was.
Green grass fields
Shimmering in sun-lit breezes
Purple wild stalks
Beneath the dark
Green pines.
We sped by
The purple flowers
In green fields
You saw me look.
One moment
Our thoughts met
In the warmth of your smile.
Years ago
I saw the trees dance
Swaying to greet the wind
Black, tall
Against the sky.
I caught their whisperings
Ran down the stairs
And slipped them
Under your door
For you
To find when you returned.
Sweet and somehow 'fragrant.' I smelled the scent of warm summer earth when I read it.
