Happiness

Who was this little creature
I once was,
Close by my mother as she
Tended her garden,
The vegetables she grew,
The flowers she loved and
Planted with an artist's brush.
There I sat at her side
Did I chatter too much?
I never pulled a weed, was never
Curious,
Just company was all I gave.

What was this little creature
I once was,
Swinging for hours
Beneath an old apple tree,
Singing my childish tunes,
Talking to the universe
From a safe and happy
Place.

How lucky to be given
Time to grow,
Sunlight and silence,
To be a little plant
In my mother's garden.
